Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada 2018
Hanover & Steinbach
July 20-22, 2018
Discover Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and the surrounding area with Laura and Gary Block July 20-22. Come along, explore and play, for three days and two nights, in this city of over 700,000 that National Geographic Magazine has named one of the top 20 best cities to see in the world in 2018. If you joined us in the past, you’ll know this trip is a premium vacation that this year will include visits near the cities of Hanover and Steinbach, east of Winnipeg . Our Andy’s Charter Service motor coach departs Little Falls at 7:00 a.m. on Friday July 20th and we’ll pick up in Randall, Motley or anywhere else on our route. Lunch today is on our own at the Boardwalk of Restaurants along the Red River in East Grand Forks. We’ll leave the United States and cross over the border at Pembina, North Dakota into Canada. On our arrival in Winnipeg, we will check in at Canad Inns Destination Centre–Club Regent Casino Hotel. The hotel offers superior quality guest rooms complete with small refrigerators, coffee makers, hair dryers, irons and boards – all in a smoke-free environment. This three diamond, four -star facility is Winnipeg’s only hotel connected to a casino complex. This complex is one of the most unique and entertaining facilities in Western Canada – Club Regent Casino, which has been completely renovated. While at Club Regent, explore the magic of Manitoba’s only walk-through saltwater aquarium, an extraordinary underwater world of exotic sea life located right in the heart of this entertainment center. Our friends at Folklorama will provide a step-on guide to escort us to the Hungarian part of Winnipeg tonight. We’ll start with a traditional Hungarian dinner that will be followed by the Hungarian Kapisztran Folk Ensemble which was founded in 1960 to foster the performance of Hungarian folk music and dance. All of the costumes the performers wear are authentic folk dress from the various regions of Hungary where the dances originate. All of the Hungarian Ensemble’s dances possess a strength and intensity evident in the energy of their performance. The bottle dance and the dance suite from Szatmar are just a couple of the selections they perform to provide audiences with a special taste of a special tradition. This is our first night in Winnipeg and we’ll return to the hotel where we can relax or spend time at the casino.
Breakfast is included at the hotel in the morning. It’s a full day of exploration in Manitoba as a step-on guide will join us on the coach and take us east of the city of Winnipeg into the beautiful Manitoba countryside that will include two stops. First, we will visit the Kismet Creek Farm, a farm sanctuary near Hanover, whose mission is to provide lifelong care and shelter for traditionally farmed animals, taking them out of the food system and giving them a safe haven. You can interact with the animals and meet the sheep, goats, alpaca and share in animal rescue and survival stories, plus learn about the various species. You’ll also see donkeys, rabbits, chickens, turkeys, cows and horses on this fully accessible farm. You will also have the chance to visit their gift shop. Then, we’re off to the Mennonite Heritage Village. Travel thru time and explore a turn-of-the-century Russian Mennonite street village on its 40 acre site. Taste traditional ethnic fare in an included lunch at the museum’s Livery Barn Restaurant with locally made Foarma Worscht with three Vereniki smothered in Schmauntfatt with a side serving of coleslaw, served with a bowl of Komst Borscht, a slice of stone ground whole wheat white bread and plautz. Explore a classic Mennonite housebarn and a fully operational Dutch windmill. View historic and heirloom treasures from Poland, Russia and Canada displayed in the Main and Gerhard Ens galleries or find that perfect souvenir at Village Books & Gifts, all open year-round in the Viaage Centre. There is always something new to experience in this bustling village. We’ll be returning to Winnipeg around 4:30. There’s a little time to freshen up at the hotel, before we unwind tonight, feel the rush of thundering hooves at historic Assiniboia Downs. We have reserved seats in the Terrace Dining Room for a sweeping view of exciting live racing while savoring certified Angus prime rib and other entrees at an all-you-can-eat buffet that is legendary throughout Winnipeg. No wonder Assiniboa Downs is #1 in all of North America for servings of the very best prime rib money can buy. And no one will count the number of times you return to the dessert table for another to-die-for treat created in the Downs’ own bake shop. Our evening at the races is also going to include a very special “Gary Block Tours” race in honor of our group. Six people are chosen to be in the Winner’s Circle for that race and will have the fun of presenting the owner with a beautifully engraved trophy and an opportunity to meet and congratulate the winning jockey. Our picture will also be taken with the winning horse and jockey. Complimentary programs and tip sheets are also included. Another fun option is taking advantage of the ambiance of the comfortable casino-style VLT lounge with popular and exciting games. This is our final night in Winnipeg and we’ll return to the hotel where we can relax or stop at the casino.
Breakfast is included once again Sunday morning. A shuttle will be provided to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church for the morning Mass. Before we depart Winnipeg, we’ll make a stop at The Forks, Manitoba’s number one tourist destination. Explore the history outdoors along the river or visit the many boutique stores for shopping and food. We’ll visit McPhillips Street Station Casino. Relive the opulent splendor of the past and saunter down the street of the historic railway village amid the bustle of old world life. Take in the dazzling view under the twinkling lights of the
chandelier in the Royal Alexandria, their turn-of-the-century grand casino. In addition to Old World elegance, the casino offers exceptional dining and favorite games. Lunch is on our own at McPhillips. We’ll travel south across the U.S. border today. Dinner tonight is on our own. Our return to Little Falls will be around 11 p.m. What a fabulous three day trip to Winnipeg. Once again, it’s bigger and better than our 2016 trip with so much more to experience.
All passengers must present a U.S. passport or a passport card in order to enter or depart the United States. If you do not have a passport or passport card you can apply at your county recorder’s office. There is about a 4-6 week turn around time.
