Madeline Island

Apostle Islands, Bayfield, Big Top Chautauqua, Judy Collins

July 10-12, 2019

There are 21 islands that make up the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, and Madeline is the 22nd and the only one with any development.  Discover the charm of Madeline Island’s history and culture, and tour fascinating sites that make it so unique.  Join Laura and Gary Block when we set aside three days and two nights exploring Madeline Island and the beautiful surrounding area. You may have seen other tour companies advertising trips to Madeline Island, but none compare to what we have to offer.  It’s not just about Madeline Island, this one also includes the surrounding area with sightseeing, Mother Nature’s beauty and numerous attractions. The three days include a tour of Bayfield, lunch at the Old Rittenhouse Inn, glass-bottomed boat tour around the Apostle Islands with the “Shipwrecks, Rocks & Lighthouse” tour,  legendary performer Judy Collins performing under the Big Top Chautauqua and boarding the ferry for a day on Madeline Island. Our Andy’s Charter Service motor coach departs Little Falls on Wednesday, July 10th from the northeast corner of Wal-Mart and we’ll pick up in Ft. Ripley, Brainerd or anywhere else on our route.  Our journey will take us through northern Wisconsin and up to Lake Superior. Lunch is on our own along our route.  This afternoon we’ll visit the Northern Great Lakes Visitors Center in Ashland, Wisconsin.  This is a wonderful introduction to the Chequamegon Bay region. The stunning architecture of the building incorporates regional themes with a brownstone base, dramatic roof lines and a five-story observation tower resembling a lighthouse with a panoramic view of Chequamegon Bay.  Engaging interactive exhibits tell the stories of the region’s history, plus there’s the “Spirit of the North” gift shop.   We’ll continue on our journey as we check into our home for the next two evenings in Red Cliff.  Escape the ordinary and experience Legendary Waters Resort & Casino with deluxe rooms and amazing views of Lake Superior.   Expect the very best in elegant décor, accommodations and gaming from the finest casino resort on the northern-most shores of Wisconsin.  Dinner is on your own this evening at the resort, do some gaming or take advantage of the swimming pool which includes an indoor/outdoor hot tub.

Day two begins with breakfast on our own.  This morning we travel to the Bayfield area when a step-on guide will join us on the motor coach.  Learn the history of Bayfield, the “Best Little Town in the Midwest”, while you see the sights of this city.  Stops include the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore headquarters and a couple of orchards.  Lunch is included today at the Old Rittenhouse Inn with an exquisite three course meal in an elegant Victorian setting with a casual feel.  Experience the unique atmosphere in the dining room with its antiques, vintage wallpapers, grand fireplace mantles and windows overlooking Lake Superior.  A self-guided tour is also included.  It’s an exciting afternoon as we prepare to view the legends that lie below the waters of Lake Superior and see two lighthouses as well, on a glass-bottomed boat tour of the Apostle Islands.   Board the Superior Princess for a glimpse of the legendary shipwrecks that lie at the bottom of the lake just north of Bayfield.  Cruise past Honeymoon Rock on Basswood Island and view the two lighthouses on Michigan Island, making our way back along the high cliffs south of Bayfield.  Wait until you see the stunning scenery of the Apostle Islands, windswept beaches, nature-carved rock formations and intricate sea caves. Let’s take a short break and enjoy strolling the streets of this harbor town, as well as the distinctive shops in downtown Bayfield.  Dinner this evening is picnic-style and included at the Big Top. The Lake Superior Big Top Chautauqua is a “unique must see” that has over 70 musical experiences every summer.  In the tradition of traveling tent shows that once put down stakes all across the country, nationally and regionally acclaimed musicians perform in this 900 seat, state-of-the-art tent theater.  You won’t find a more uniquely satisfying experience that sharing a beautiful summer night enjoying truly world-class entertainment at this unique venue.  This evening, it’s the mellow sounds of Judy Collins. This award-winning singer-songwriter is known for her imaginative interpretation of traditional and contemporary folk standards and her own original compositions.  Judy has received four Grammy Award nominations, released her first album in 1961 and has topped the music charts with songs such as “Both Sides Now”, “Someday Soon” and “Send in the Clowns”.  Her rendition of “Amazing Grace” was selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry for the Library of Congress in 2017.  This will be a relaxing summer evening with music by the lake.  We’ll return to the hotel following the show at the Big Top.

Day three begins, once again, with breakfast on our own as we check out of the hotel and return to Bayfield to catch the ferry to Madeline Island.  Madeline is a 20 minute ferry ride and the journey provides spectacular views of Lake Superior and several of the Apostle Islands.  Once on the island, an experienced step-on guide will board our motor coach and will take us on a narrated tour showcasing the natural beauty and the island’s rich history.  We’ll find a grand display of wildflowers in July and the fruits of the season.  Madeline Island is a beautiful and fascinating place, but only really appreciated through the eyes of a local guide.  We’ll tour the village of La Pointe, the historical museum with its 25 minute multi-media musical extravaganza illustrating the island’s colorful history and the Catholic Mission Cemetery.  With graves dating back to the 1700’s, this is a fascinating landmark where some of the graves are covered and protected by roofed shelters, spirit houses and others are surrounded by tiny weathered picket fences.  Capture the ambiance and splendor of Lake Superior while enjoying a wonderful lunch at The Pub.  Two choices for lunch...broiled Lake Superior trout or herbed marinated chicken.  Please make your choice when signing up.  Explore Big Bay Beach, the lake’s two miles of unspoiled shoreline and make a stop at Woods Hall Craft Shop, a cooperative of over 50 island artisans, weavers and others.  We have a great day planned for you and we’ll depart the Apostle Islands at mid-afternoon with wonderful memories and begin our journey home.  When we arrive in Minnesota, we’ll take a break at the visitor center overlooking Duluth and Lake Superior; expecting to arrive in Little Falls around 8:30.  Bring your camera, as this will be a trip you’ll want to remember for years to come.  Sign up today for an outstanding three day, two night outing that is sure to please everyone.
