Where in the world is Door County? Door County is a region in “the left thumb” of Wisconsin – the small land mass projecting in the water from the east-central side of the state that contains 34 named islands and dozens of small cities, towns and communities. This is a beautiful time of the year and we’re expecting to see cherry blossoms throughout Door County. Few destinations in the Midwest provide a combination of natural beauty, small-town charm and a sense of history as rich as Door County. With 300 miles of shoreline, you can watch a sunrise and a sunset over the water without leaving Door County. Join Laura and Gary Block, May 26th thru May 29 for four days and three nights of fun and adventure.
We leave Little Falls at 6:30 a.m. May 26th and will pick up in Royalton, Rice, St. Cloud or anywhere else along the way. Our comfortable Andy’s Charter motor coach and driver will take us to the northeast tip of Wisconsin and our overnight accommodations at Rowley’s Bay Resort in Ellison Bay. This resort is just steps away from 700 feet of pristine Lake Michigan shoreline. This is the largest full-service resort in northern Door County that features an indoor pool, whirlpool and fitness room, Rowley’s Pub and Grandma’s Swedish Bakery, famous for their half-pound pecan and cinnamon rolls. After a full day of traveling, let’s enjoy an included international dinner buffet this evening that features a 14-foot soup, salad and dessert bar.
Day two starts with a full breakfast buffet before we meet our step-on guide, Linda Stuth, a 5th generation Door County native who has been in the tour guide business for almost 25 years. Linda will be on the coach with us today for a fun-filled knowledgeable tour of Door County with a sense of humor. Our first stop is Bjorklunden Chapel, a small wooden chapel built in a late 12th century Norwegian stave church style, handcrafted between 1939 and 1947 and a favorite stop in Door County. The chapel contains 41 hand-painted frescoes and exceptionally fine carved-wood furnishings. From here we’ll travel to Cove Point. This is 19 acres of scenic beauty that is well-known for its wave-worn limestone ledges, underwater caves and a stirring view of Lake Michigan. Nearby is Whitefish Dunes State Park. Admire over 800 acres of forest and dunes on the rugged Lake Michigan shore with a mile of sand beach, two miles of rocky shore and the highest sand dunes in Wisconsin. There will be some free time in Fish Creek this noon and lunch is on your own at one of the many restaurants. Fish Creek is a hub for shopping in northern Door County and the county’s most walkable shopping center. Get ready to see cherry blossoms, if Mother Nature is kind to us. This afternoon we’re visiting Seaquist Orchards where they have been raising and harvesting cherries for over 100 years on over 1,000 acres. This orchard is the premier grower and retailer of cherries and cherry products in Wisconsin and located near the top of the Door Peninsula. Door County’s cooler Spring months and unique soil composition make it an ideal spot for growing cherries. Once mid-May rolls around and the blossoms are in full bloom, it’s primetime. Starting in the south on May 23rd and continuing north for the next week or two. The full-bloom stage only lasts about two weeks. Well-groomed roads throughout acres of cherries, apples, apricots and sweet cherries offer an opportunity for us to see a “working farm”. Another tour guide will step on the coach and give a fun informational tour. After that experience, a wide variety of samples are available, along with some great shopping. It’s back to the resort for a late afternoon of fun and food as we gather round the cauldron for a one-of-a-kind event – a fish boil. Fish boils are an integral part of Door County’s tradition and have been one of the area’s most alluring tourist attractions for more than 70 years. Fish boil? Many people think that the delicious fresh whitefish netted from Lake Michigan taste like lobster, once its dipped in a bowl of Wisconsin’s favorite export, butter. Rowley’s Resort has taken the fish boil to a new level, with an entertaining actor who plays the part of the namesake of the bay, Peter Rowley. Sitting lakeside around a hot fire with a boiling cauldron of water, “Peter” tells us the colorful story of the bay from the early days up to the present, inserting jokes and inviting audience participation. The first ingredient to be added are the red potatoes, followed by tiny sweet onions, and just before the finale, the basket of fresh Lake Michigan whitefish. As the boilmaster stokes the fire, all are warned to move a good distance from the pot, as the photo-op boilover includes a raging fire. The boilover takes all the oils of the fish with it. The pot is lifted and carried into the restaurant where all will enjoy. If someone doesn’t care for fish, no problem, the generous all-you-can-eat fish boil buffet includes chicken, meatballs, various side dishes so no one will leave hungry. Two more features of the fish boil are the Swedish Limpa bread and a cherry dessert both baked onsite at Grandma’s Swedish Bakery.
Our third day begins with a hot breakfast buffet as we prepare for another fun day in Door County. Our experiences today begin with a concert in a schoolhouse with entertainer Dan Meunier. This 1930’s schoolhouse features works of art and eclectic antiquities. A composer, singer and storyteller, Dan is a Wisconsin gem and a familiar stop for bus tours. Enjoy a special concert of old-time music, comedy and hymns that are sure to please. Dan performs from a grand piano, upright piano, an antique parlor organ and closing with a group sing-a-long. Our day continues as we head out to the farm with a tour of the Door County Creamery in Sister Bay. But this isn’t an ordinary farm as we enjoy a light walking tour and find out how the farm is operated and up-close encounters with the stars of the farm…daddy, mommy and baby goats! The tour includes gelato and cheese tastings, guided in depth hands-on tour of the farm, milking parlor, history, cheese making and topped off with a delicious lunch. You have three choices of oven roasted sandwiches. All three are listed on the sign-up area. Please make your lunch choice when you sign up. From the farm land to the waters of Lake Michigan, now we’ll discover Door County on a Sister Bay scenic boat tour. Enjoy an insightful narrative as the 149- passenger double deck tour boat wanders the shores of Green Bay towards Peninsula State Park’s 146- year old Eagle Bluff Lighthouse. As we move south past the village of Ephraim, you’ll learn about its rich history as well as the millionaire’s estate on Horseshoe Island. Have your cameras ready as we get an up close and personal view of Eagle Cave, 40 feet above the shoreline. Hear stories of French explorers and early native American inhabitants as we pull around Welker’s Point. This will be a busy day that will be topped off with a chef carved prime rib buffet at the resort.
We begin our final day in Door County with the breakfast buffet and prepare for our departure. At mid-morning we’ll visit the Door County Winery and Distillery in Sturgeon Bay, Door County’s largest and oldest winery and distillery all under one roof in the old Carlsville Schoolhouse built in 1868. The tour will cover the history, production, the winemaking and distillery process. Free tasting of over 60 beverages including wines, ciders and beers. Spirits tasting for a small fee. In addition, there’s a large shopping area with samplings of gourmet foods, fudge, olive oils and local cherry products.
